Hope Springs

The cool of the
morning gathers
’round
but will not last —
I’m sure.
I eye the
cool, dark, damp
ground knowingly.
For just where
no eye can
see are the
gathered energies
from death —
sugar peas, carrots, beats,
lettuce, kale, and spinach,
squash, tomatoes,
and radish —
waiting, waking,
and working —
new life —
downwards
and upwards.
